Mariama Bâ

« C'est à nous, femmes, de prendre notre destin en mains pour bouleverser l'ordre établi à notre détriment et ne point le subir. »

(Our translation: "It is up to us, women, to take our destiny into our own hands, to overturn the order established at our expense rather than endure it.")

— Mariama Bâ, Une si longue lettre (So Long a Letter), 1979.

A Senegalese teacher and activist, Mariama Bâ wrote So Long a Letter in a matter of weeks. The novel won the very first Noma Award in 1980 and has crossed borders and generations to become a classic of African women's literature.

This sentence is not a timid appeal: it is a clear instruction, addressed to every woman who was taught to stay silent. This Mariama Bâ quote poster, printed in the original French, is African literature wall art for those who take the lead.
