The Story of Routes

Routes is made for people like us: those who move, who migrate, who adapt, but who never forget where they come from. Those driven by freedom. Those no chain could ever shackle.

We carry our roots everywhere we go. In our suitcases, in our accents, in the words we whisper when we are far from home.

Routes selects the words we should never forget. Those that remind us who we are when we are far from what feels familiar. Those that transform our four walls into a home.

These words, those of Fanon, of Douglass, of our rappers and poets, were not born in comfort. They were born of resistance, of survival, of self-affirmation in the face of erasure.

Routes is a crossing point: a place where the words of our ancestors resonate so that their children may see them, absorb them, and carry them in turn.

To be at home, everywhere.

All roads lead to us.

The brand

Who's behind Routes?

Routes was founded by Anne-Line, a professional translator and localizer, of African descent, raised between cultures. Unable to find wall art that represented her identity without being folkloric or generic, she decided to create what she was looking for.

Routes is her first brand project and the beginning of a long conversation with her community.

The first collection, Liberté / Free At Last, is illustrated by Baptiste "Wako" Buonomo.

Why launching on May 10th, 2026?

May 10 is the National Day of Remembrance of the Slave Trade, Slavery, and their Abolition, a day established in France in 2006, following the law of May 21, 2001, when the Senate adopted, in its second reading, the law recognizing slavery as a crime against humanity, known as the Taubira Law.

Routes therefore chooses to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this law, which recognized the transatlantic slave trade and slavery as a crime against humanity. The words we celebrate were born from this history. It is time for them to enter our homes.

The designs

How are the designs made?

Our posters are printed on 200 gsm (0.26 mm thick) smooth, semi-gloss paper, which is FSC certified and environmentally friendly.

The printing uses 12-colour technology which ensures vibrant, precise colours with exceptional depth, far beyond standard 4-colour inkjet prints.

What are the sizes available?

Our posters are available in three sizes:

  • A4 (21 × 29.7 cm) — ideal for a small space, an office, or a first room
  • A3 (29.7 × 42 cm) — for a more assertive statement
  • B2 (50 × 70 cm) — for a strong presence on a large wall
Do the screen colors match the printed ones?

Printing is a process that may differ slightly from the screen display depending on your monitor's calibration. We do everything to ensure color fidelity through our providers' use of 12-color printing technology, which offers greater depth and precision than standard prints. The final result is crisp, warm, and true to the spirit of each design.

Are the posters framed?

No, we have chosen to deliver our posters unframed. Every interior is unique, and we prefer to let you choose the frame that best harmonizes with your space. This approach also allows you to freely compose your wall gallery.

Quotes and Authors

Why were these authors and quotes selected?

Our choices are made for their thematic, historical, and emotional resonance. We prioritize voices that have made their mark on the history of their community: from 19th-century abolitionists to contemporary Caribbean and African writers whose words still resonate today.

Routes does not select quotes for their notoriety. It selects them for what they say, what they cost the person who spoke them, and what they continue to offer those who read them.

How do you choose the quotes for each collection?

Each collection is built around a central theme. Quotes are then selected for their ability to embody this theme with strength and authenticity, blending eras, geographies, and languages, because our voices have no borders.

What is a licensed quote?

A licensed quote is a quote whose original work is not yet in the public domain. The author or their rights holders own the rights to this text. Routes has obtained a license to use these quotes commercially and pays royalties for each sale of a relevant poster.

This is what differentiates Routes from a simple decoration store: we do not reproduce words without permission or remuneration. Every purchase is an act of economic justice towards those who created.

The Business Model

What is Routes' royalty model?

For every licensed quote sold, Routes pays a royalty to the author or their rightful heirs. This model is at the heart of our identity: we refuse to exploit the words of our thinkers.

Routes also aims, in the long term, to pay royalties to the artists who bring the illustrated portraits on each poster to life—because visual creation deserves to be remunerated just as much as literary creation.

Who collects the royalties?

Royalties are paid to authors and/or their rights holders, generally through their publishers. For authors whose works are in the public domain, no royalties are due, but full and respectful attribution remains a non-negotiable requirement for Routes.
