Anna Julia Cooper
"The cause of freedom is not the cause of a race or a sect, a party or a class — it is the cause of humankind, the very birthright of humanity."
— Anna Julia Cooper, A Voice from the South, 1892
Anna Julia Cooper, born into slavery in North Carolina, and a Sorbonne PhD at 67, dedicated her life to demonstrating that the emancipation of black women was inseparable from universal freedom. In 1892, she wrote what many would not dare to say until a century later.
For those who always knew it was bigger than them.
